Issue #21: UI improvements

Description
There are quite a few things in the UI that I think should be improved (including #17). But since UI can be somewhat subjective and hard to coordinate I though I ask if someone else is already working on some general UI improvements.
If no one is working on this yet I would create some pull request. For bigger changes I would create Issues (with mockups) to discuss them first.

I think it is much better to use the mailing list or IRC for this kind of discussions.
The biggest thing I'm waiting for is smf's fontawesome changes which are quite intrusive.

There is also some "evolve" support and some avatar refactorings ... and licensing concerns for the fontawesome wrapping.

Closing this too broad issue: further discussions can take place on the mailing list, or specific problems can be reported in new issues.
